I gotta be honest, my favourite thing about hopping in my car every day and pulling out into the big wide world isn’t the car I’m maneuvering, but me getting to soundtrack my drive to my favourite tunes, or the new album I’m trying to put through the paces. Sure, a good pair of headphones is a great way to experience a piece of music, but for my money, nothing beats how music sounds on a car stereo. And, it’s not just about the quality of the system, it’s about the feeling around you, cruising down the highway in summer, the sun shining, the vibes immaculate. Now, what are those best songs to put on for a summer drive? I polled the Cars.ca team, and we got to the bottom of it. Playlist below!

To me, a good summer driving song is actually found in a couple of polar opposite moods and contrasting driving situations. First, you got the ones you’re probably thinking of immediately, the kind with the top down, wind in your hair, sun shining, cruising down the highway with an uplifting belter that makes you sing along and feel on top of the world, this is where the classic rock tunes come blaring out the system, staples on car stereos for a reason. Then, you got more of my style, it’s midnight and you’re cruising through a city with illumination from the surrounding buildings cascading down on you, you’re driving at a meditative speed, with matching sounds from your sound system, this is straight up hip-hop and R&B vibes, for a modern crawl in the summertime. Enough with painting a picture, let’s get to the tracks!
As much as I’d love to curate a whole playlist for you straight from my own recommendations, you deserve a varied palette of summer tunes, so I set out and asked my fellow Cars.ca team members. The following list resulted, one that I know you won’t be disappointed in when you hit shuffle on your next summer cruise. From yesteryear classics like “I Can’t Drive 55” by Sammy Hagar to modern-day classics like Rihanna’s “Shut Up and Drive,” we’ve got something for everyone in the list below. Extra points if you can guess my entrant!
